Cinema Pastoral5.1 Sound Installation, 2005

cinema pastoral installation shot
Installation view from Islip Art Museum, 2005

Speakers were inserted into five bales of straw that were placed on the periphery of an old Carriage House. Seats are placed in the center, which is unusual for my works, in order to emphasize the fixed point 5.1 cinema listening experience. Emanating from the straw bales are field recordings of cars passing by on the highway directly outside the Carriage House. These drive-bys are controlled by a computer in real-time to create a dynamic listening experience as cars seem to race from one location to another. Perhaps by some accounts this is a boring movie, though it seems to me that watching and listening to machines is more or less what we do now. This piece was commissioned and exhibited by the Islip Art Museum as part of the exhibition Site Specifics '05.
